Season Update: Eugene, Registration, Practices and More

By Jim Boss, 09/16/19, 4:30PM PDT

Hello Bend Rapids Community,

Fall is in the air and hockey is on our minds.  We were pleased to see many took advantage of summer dryland training at the Pavilion where players participated in shooting drills, an agility station and floorball.

Eugene Ice Sessions

Last Saturday was the second of six consecutive Saturday ice sessions at Eugene.  We had over forty players attend of which eight were goalies.  As a gentle reminder, we are asking players/families to select one of two try-out/evaluation sessions (9/21 or 9/28).  At 12U and above we will identify our strongest skilled players for Select/A player designation; so, try-outs are mandatory.  At 10U we encourage, but not required, participation so we may evenly divide players as we may have two teams at this age level.  Players/families have three choices to consider to accommodate their individual needs:

  1. All-in: $300.  Players may skate at every session.  $150 of the $300 will be a credit toward season registration. REGISTER HERE
  2. Try-out/Evaluation Only: $150.  Players skate at either 9/21 or 9/28 session only.  $150 will be a credit toward season registration.  As a result the net cost of try-outs/evaluations is zero. REGISTER HERE
  3. Drop-in: $50.  This option is popular for dual-sport athletes where players, perhaps, can only commit to try-outs but want one or more sessions of their choosing.  For example, we estimate 9/14 will be the most popular drop-in date as it is the week prior to the first week of try-outs/evaluations.  In this instance a family would pay $150 for the try-out/evaluation session and $50 for a drop-in session. REGISTER HERE

Note: Players only need to select one try-out/evaluation date.  If a player wants to skate on 9/21 (drop-in or all-in) but select 9/28 as their try-out/evaluation date, the ice will be managed accordingly even during the try-out/evaluation dates.  This maximizes choices for families.  On an exception basis, there will be one make up date: Oct 5th.  Please contact:

Season Start Date & Practice Schedule

Weather permitting, the Pavilion is targeting Monday, October 21st to kick off our season.

8U: (1+hrs/wk):
Mondays:  3:30 pm - 4:30 pm
Our parent organization, Bend Ice, was provided eight Wednesday ice sessions from Bend Parks and Rec which conclude at the end of the calendar year.  This ice time is from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm (premium ice time).  Bend Rapids may be allocated the majority of that ice time.  These details are being discussed amongst the Bend Ice club sports which also includes figure skating and curling.  We will make an announcement once Bend Ice makes their decision.  The Rapids goal is to use that ice time for 8U & 10U.

10U (2 hrs/wk):
Mondays:  3:30 pm - 4:30 pm
Thursdays: 6:30 am - 7:30 am
See note above regarding potential early season Wednesday ice time opportunities.

12U (2.5hrs/wk):
Tuesdays: 6:30 am to 7:30 am
Thursdays: 6:30 am to 8:00 am

14U (3hrs/wk):
Tuesdays: 6:30 am to 8:00 am
Fridays: 6:30 am to 8:00 am

18U (3hrs/wk):
Wednesdays: 6:30 am to 8:00 am
Fridays: 6:30 am to 8:00 am

We are grateful to our partners at Bend Parks and Rec and Bend Ice, for the first time ever, securing afternoon ice time for our 8U & 10U age levels.  After an urgent appeal, due to Bend-La Pine Schools start time changes, we were offered one afternoon ice session.

Parent Volunteering & Volunteer Coordinator

The Bend Rapids committee considered an additional fee of $150 to player registration in lieu of 10 parent volunteer hours.  The Bend Rapids needs volunteers such as team managers, scoreboard operators, locker room monitors, penalty box monitors, help at home and away tournaments, etc.  Last season we had few volunteers step up which left the majority of the workload on the few, remaining, dedicated volunteers.  If history repeats itself the Rapids will institute an additional fee to address this pain point next season.

To help organize our volunteers the Bend Rapids are seeking a Volunteer Coordinator.  Soon you will receive an email with a job description soliciting interest for this position.  Stay tuned.

Thank you,
-Bend Rapids Steering Committee
